Debt is easy for many of us to try to ignore. But as Norfolk, Va., resident Patrick McMillan can attest, that isn’t a sustainable approach to finances. “I was in the military. I earned a lot of money, but I didn’t save a whole lot,” Patrick said. “My retirement was an eye-opener for me — that’s when things started to get challenging. I filed for bankruptcy twice. I saw that my future would be dim if I didn’t make changes.” Now, through the support of Bank On Norfolk, Patrick’s got a brighter financial future. Bank On helps people like Patrick build the skills they need to take control of their finances, so that if disaster strikes they will be financially resilient. This program is made possible through Cities of Service (in partnership with Bloomberg Philanthropies, the Rockefeller Foundation, and the AmeriCorps VISTA program).
